The Pollution damage to our skin & how to prevent it / Prevage City Smart SPF 50 Hydrating Shield by Elizabeth Arden / first impressions review

Pollution is a growing world-wide concern, and I recently found out that in London it has exceeded its annual pollution limit for 2016 in just one week, which is crazy! We all know that pollution is harmful to our health, but not many people actually talk about the effects pollution has on our skin.

I live just outside London, but I travel into the city quite a lot these days, attending work meetings and events so I have done some research to find out more about how the pollution really effects our skin and what we can do to prevent this. Previously, I though that it was the UV damage that was the main factor in premature ageing, but research is now showing that pollution is actually worse and exposure to pollution would add a year to the age of your skin by the time you reach 40, which is actually shocking!

Pollutants attack our cells which makes our skin look dull and grey. They also interfere with the skin’s ability to produce collagen, which causes premature lines and wrinkles. Things like smoke, dirt and exhaust fumes block our pores causing congestion and blemishes. All of these sounds pretty scary but now that I am more aware of it I have looked into ways to protect my skin that I wanted to share with you in todays post and hopefully that will help some of you too.

Wearing sun protection all year round is very important, not only does it protect against UVA and UVB rays, it provides the skin with its first line of defence against all environmental aggressors. Pollution also tends to be worse on sunny days when there is plenty of UV penetration to fuel chemical reactions. So a product that I have been testing out recently is the new Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart SPF 50 Hydration Shield* which works as a invisible skin shield to protect your skin against pollution. Elizabeth Arden have spent years working on this product and it really is first-of-its-kind. This product was developed in partnership with leading scientists and dermatologists, so it can be used daily to protect against the environment with a DNA Enzyme Complex to help strengthen skin and keep it looking younger, smoother and brighter.

I have been using this product for a few weeks now and I have noticed my skin is looking more even and much more clear. I would normally get blocked pores after a day in the city but when I have been using Prevage City Smart I have noticed less congestion. It has a triple action protection to protect, prevent and strengthen your skin so I’m looking forward to see the long term benefits using this product. I will definitely do an update in a couple of months time if you guys are interested. A few more things I wanted to mention about the cream; it has a sheer consistency, it feels light and hydrating on the skin, you can wear it over your day moisturiser or on its own under makeup. I also like the packaging, comes in a nice silver tube with a pump.

A few other tips to protect your skin against pollution would be to always cleanse thoroughly at the end of the day, also exfoliate on a regular basis to help get rid of dirt and pollution sitting on the skin. Last but not least-eat a variety of antioxidants and look for products that contain them too. Vitamin C is a particularly powerful antioxidant which, when applied topically, helps to protect skin cells against environmental damage and neutralises toxins. It also builds collagen and brightens skin, which will help with the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and an uneven skin tone.

So I hope you found this post helpful, I know all this can be a bit overwhelming but it’s good to know in order to be able to protect your skin and if you have any questions, please leave them below and I’ll do my best to answer them.

I hope you are all having a lovely evening. Victoria xo

Would you recommend this Elizabeth Arden product over Dermalogica Pure Light spf 50? Which do you prefer and see the most results with?

Hi, I don’t think I’ve used that product from Dermalogica, is it just an SPF or also a pollution shield?

Hi Victoria, thanks for getting back to me so soon.

I was referring to your blog post ‘New Favourite Skincare products! Dermalogica Power Bright TRx Collection & Redness Relief Primer!’ dated 1st April 2015 where you mention that you have tried the Dermalogica Pure Light spf 50 so just wondered which one you would recommend.

In addition, do you currently have the same skincare routine (ie using the same exact products) as your you tube video ‘My updated skincare routine for Autumn/Winter’ – 7th Oct 2015?

Hi hun, oh right I see ahh being a beauty blogger I get to try so many products and yes that Dermalogica SPF was really great but doesn’t work the same way as the Elizabeth Arden anti pollution shield. My skincare is different now I have introduced new products to it and I will be doing an updated video very soon 🙂 Hope that helps xx
